I’m back home after a too-brief trip to the City of Angels to visit William. Los Angeles is a very interesting city to say the least; I’m not entirely sure what I think of it. There’s such a large discrepancy between the wealthy and the poor there, and everyone seems so accepting of it. We were able to stop by Rodeo Drive (not to marvel in the world of hyper-luxury, mind you, but to stop in Niketown to grab a Manchester United jersey for my brother) and it astonished me how extravagant people seemed. Obviously, we have a significant shopping culture in Vancouver as well, but in LA it felt so blatant. It was very disconcerting to say the least.
Otherwise, we spent the majority of our time in Santa Monica and the Venice Beach area, which is really lovely. We strolled down the boardwalk on Saturday morning to take in the eccentric Venice Beach culture – something we don’t really have in Vancouver. During the afternoon, we stopped by the Getty Villa to take in the Getty Foundation’s massive collection of antiquities.
The majority of Sunday was spent at the Getty Center, which was amazing, albeit a little overwhelming. I unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to visit many museums in my life – but William, whose parents both are from art backgrounds, has, and he particularly enjoys the Getty Center. This place is massive, although William informed me that the Louvre is much larger and infinitely more overwhelming.
We grabbed some In-N-Out for lunch on Sunday (William’s first In-N-Out experience!) and spent the rest of the day exploring Los Angeles and fitting in some shopping. I unfortunately did not get to shop tons, which I am surprisingly okay with, but I did nab a beautiful Dolce Vita skirt from the Dolce Vita store on Main Street in Santa Monica. It was a bit of a splurge for me, but it’s super comfortable and versatile, has a wonderful print, and is 100% silk (which I used as justification).
William, knowing my massive adoration for the film 500 Days of Summer, also took me to Angela’s Knoll, which is Tom’s favourite spot in LA. It was really neat seeing the spot in real life, although it’s significantly dingier than it appears in the movie, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
My trip only lasted from Friday-Monday (I flew in Friday evening, and returned Monday afternoon) and it was too short for my liking; now I am unfortunately back to reality and attempting to battle a massive pile of homework, assignments, and reading for next week. Here’s counting the days to my next trip!
